Ari’s page |
|
Ari (Arzuw) is Galen’s half-brother. He was Galka’s last foal and was sold to a friend as a weanling. She kept him until he was 4 and sold him to a lady in California. He didn’t quite work out for her and came back home. This has proven to be a wonderful thing—he and Callie, my 13 year old daughter, have become best friends. Although Ari is still a bit green, he forgives her and takes care of her. They are working in the arena on trot poles and going straight, and are going out on the trails with me. Callie and Ari did their first ever organized ride at Home on the Range, in Othello, WA in late March and both did very well. We did the 11 mile trail ride and after a somewhat rocky start, they settled in very nicely and we finished in about 3 hours.
We will continue to work in the arena and out on the trails and Callie thinks maybe we can do a 25 mile ride next time.
We just got back from Horse Around Days, a brand-new expo in Mt. Vernon, WA. Callie and Ari were fabulous and are ready to do it again.
November 2007—We never did get to another ride this year, but Ari and Callie have been doing some more trot poles in the arena and itty-bitty jumps and I’ve been working on his basics too We’ll see how far we get next year!
February 2009—Well, Callie has turned 14 and is now into makeup, school and clothes (no boys yet though!) and decided she doesn’t want to ride anymore. I have to respect that decision, although I don’t understand it (yes, I am a horseaholic). So, my friend Monica is riding Ari now, and has been working on conditioning him for his first LD ride in April at Home on the Range. Ari appears to think this is just fine and is really tuning into Monica and her carrots. We’ve been getting out as many times as possible on the local trails and getting some arena riding in too.
September 2009—Ari got two LDs in this year, but was pulled at the second one. We top-tenned on the first one, so we were a bit surprised at his pull. A vet call later and we find out he has an old hip injury! This is a fairly common injury, called a ‘dropped hip’ and probably happened when he hit his hip on a stall door or post sometime in his past. Unfortunately, it’s the ligaments from the hip that are causing the problem and he’s been prescribed with 6 months of very easy riding on straight lines. But, up until this, he was the star of Monica’s Seattle PI blog, Horsebytes. We’re hoping that after a winter of light riding, body work and chiropractic, he will be back doing endurance rides. He certainly seemed to enjoy them and showed good aptitude for it.
June 2010– Ari has been spending some time as a babysitter with Julie Manuele in Sequim. She has a colt that needed a ‘big buddy’, so Ari is it. He was a bit miffed that he’s gone from Monica’s #1 mount to ‘middle management’, but when he comes home, we’ll start putting him back to work. Reportedly, he takes his babysitting very seriously. |
