Final 2002 Akhal-Teke Grading Results
The results are all sent out, the rankings have been figured and the 2002 grading tour is finally done. Yippee! Each time, the tour gets bigger and better – we’ll see what happens next time. The 2002 grading was the third grading that Dr. Tatyana Ryabova has done in the United States: She graded most of Phil Case’s horses in 1997, did a tour of (mainly) the western United States in 1999 and went all over the United States in 2002. There were some changes made by the Russians for the 2002 grading tour that we just became aware of – nothing was mentioned while we were setting up the grading tour and we were only notified AFTER the entire tour was done. The Russian grading system was made tougher in 2002. The requirements for each of the categories are now higher than before, especially in measurements. There are now 7 groups (Classes and Categories) from the highest (best) to the lowest: Elite I, Elite II, Elite III, Class I-I, Class I-II, Class I-III, Class II. After that there are culls. Horses that were Elite (I, II or III) may and often are now only Class I. While this may seem arbitrary to us, in our 1999 grading we had 55% horses graded Elite. From a statistical standpoint, this is not acceptable and the actions taken by the Russians have changed our horse’s grades to a more correct bell curve. Rankings for all horses graded in the tour are included. Some horses were left out by the Russians, most likely inadvertently.
