1999 American Gradings
The 1999 Gradings were completed on April 29, 1999. There were six sites that horses were graded at: Seattle, Washington, Lapwai, Idaho, 2 sites in Northern Colorado, Nixon, Texas and St. James, Missouri. Obviously, not all the North American horses were graded, but Dr. Tatyana Ryabova did see about 135 pure, non-pure and part-bred Akhal-Tekes, so she got to see a good percentage of the horses here. We tried to keep to the same format for each site, with the horses shown in hand at a halt first, then on the triangle at a walk and then on a larger triangle at the trot. It didn’t work perfectly for each site (18 inches of snow makes finding that triangle pretty hard!), but overall it worked pretty well. Tatyana spent up to twenty minutes a horse, measuring, commenting on conformation and type, giving breeding suggestions and just visiting. It was an excellent learning experience for the participants, as Tatyana explained why she gave certain scores and was very patient answering questions. As of yet, the Association hasn’t received the grading forms (these will be sent on to the horse’s owner), but we do have the grading results, which follow. These results are for the purebreds only (there wasn’t enough time to finish the non-purebreds), and hopefully those results will be in the next newsletter. A few horses (younger stock) don’t appear - I’m not sure if it was a record-keeping slip or what - things were pretty busy for Tatyana and Luda (her assistant for the trip). It was very encouraging that 55% of the horses that were classified (those that were born in 1996 or before) were considered Elite. |
