Home On The Range LD Ride 2005

Wendy Connell and I hauled Galen and Astrachan over to Moses Lake, Washington for the 2005 Home on the Range Ride.

We started off great, but had a tire blow-out on the trailer just outside of Moses Lake.  A friendly trucker stopped to help us put the spare on and we then went to the local Les Schwab Tire Center to buy another spare.  Always check your tire  pressure before you head out!

We got into camp and parked next to Jennifer LeBlanc, who has been Wendy’s mentor for several years.  We got to try out Khan’s new panel corral with it’s electric running along the top.  It worked pretty well, although we did decide to do some modifications after he kept waking us up all night by rattling the entire trailer when we dug into his hay bag.  Galen was outside the corral in an electric pen and he and Khan got along just fine.

Wendy had decided to do a 50 on Khan, so they left before Galen and I.  I promised to crew for her after I got done with my ride.  I rode with Jennifer and David LeBlanc and they flew the entire way.  Looking back, I should have found someone a lot less speedy, but I didn’t have a clue.  Galen kept up and came through with flying colors, but I had a metabolic crash.  We top-tenned and I was so exhausted I couldn’t do the final trot out and had to find a friendly volunteer to do that.  I dropped my gear, took Galen back to the trailer, got him all cleaned up, blanketed and fed and then I crashed.  Literally.  Poor Wendy came in after her first loop and I couldn’t even get up.  So much for the crewing!

We ended up in the top ten, (Jennifer and David were ahead of me and ended up with Best Condition 1 and 2), and Galen definitely proved he can be speedy.  I resolved to go much slower at my next ride though.

Wendy and Khan did a very respectable time for the 50, but Khan stepped on a rock just out from the finish and didn’t pass the trot-out.  He was very good at the vet checks and gave her no trouble during the ride.  She even had people ask if he was really a stallion!
